In January 2013, Waste Warriors entered "Spark the Rise "Competition a funding platform by the Mahindra Group to support new ideas, innovation & organizations rising up in their areas of work.
This was not Waste Warriors first attempt at the competition, but this time there was a happy ending with the team finally winning the 4 lakh grant thanks to votes from well wishers & supporters from across the country.
In February 2013, following the win, Jodie Underhill along with Tashi Pareek, Co-Founder and Project Manager were invited to attend the second level of competition in Mumbai and pitch for the 50 lakh grant finale.
They didn't make it through to the final round but they did get a chance to meet Mr. Anand Mahindra. The meeting opened many door of possibilities and they humbly requested to be given pickup trucks for their waste collection projects in Dharamsala and Dehradun. Mr. Mahindra showed complete confidence in their work and graciously granted two brand new Bolero Pickup trucks to their organization.
Mr. Anand Mahindra said “Waste Warriors is doing commendable work in the field of waste collection and disposal. As a "Spark the Rise" finalist, the Mahindra group is proud to support their efforts in Dehradun and Dharamsala and I hope that other cities learn from their experience and embrace sustainable, holistic and community driven approaches to waste disposal."
After months of excited anticipation, the trucks have finally arrived. The truck for Dehradun will initially be used to collect the numerous piles of waste left by municipal sweepers along Rajpur Road. Waste Warriors have submitted proposals to the MDDA, the Mayor Mr Vinod Chamoli, the District Magistrate Mr Purushottham and the ADM Mr Harak Singh Rawat regarding the creation of a 7km Clean Zone to run from the Clock Tower to the Musoorie Diversion fountain.
Waste Warriors are very proud to have the support of the Mahindra Group and very excited of the growth and opportunity that lies ahead.
Jodie Underhill said “ To date we have had just had a cycle rickshaw so this is a big step up for us and will massively increase the amount of garbage we are able to collect. We would like to say a huge thank you to Anand Mahindra and Mahindra Group for their generosity and support.
