2000 people attended our rally against election posters on 5th May 2013. More than 500,000 posters were plastered over Dehradun in the run up to the elections. Flyposting is illegal under The Uttaranchal Prevention of Defacement of Public Property Act, 2003 but action is never taken against the offenders. It’s time for that to change!
A number of our own projects have been spoilt due to these posters and it’s not just public places that have been targeted, during the night private homes and businesses have also been under attack with some owners waking up to 30 posters on their wall.
Waste Warriors and students from the Doon School organized a rally on Sunday 5th May from St Joseph’s School to demand that the city be cleaned up. Prior to the rally the Mayor, Mr Vinod Chamoli addressed the crowd and pledged to do his bit to help. The City Magistrate/ADM Mr Harak Singh Rawat also spoke and pledged his full support to the campaign. District Magistrate Dr Purushottham was unable to attend but issued notices to all the politicial parties regarding the removal of their posters. Waste Warriors Managing Committee members Mrs Shanti Varma, Aloke Lal and Sujata Paul Maliah also took to the stage to address the masses.
We were delighted to have a whopping 1000 people from the Nirankari Baba mission with us! Students from the following schools attended the rally and most certainly made their voices heard!
Pine Hall School, Brightlands School, Summer Valley School, Jaswant Modern school, Kasiga School, Brooklyn School, Hilton School, The Heritage School, Doon International School, Carman School, The Doon School, Scholars Home and Doon Cambridge School
Big thanks to everyone who attended, now we have to keep on the pressure to ensure the posters are actually taken down.
