From the Lens to the Ground: Why I Swapped My Camera for a Mission

Sometimes, destiny hides behind the lens of a camera. My journey with Waste Warriors didn’t start in an office; it started during a shoot for Royal Enfield x Green Hub Western Himalayas. As I filmed the landscape, I was introduced to the work Waste Warriors was doing. It was a moment of clarity.

As a filmmaker, I had spent years capturing the world, but I felt a growing urge to do more than just document—I wanted to be part of the change. I wanted to work “on the ground,” dealing with the realities of waste and environmental conservation firsthand.

Choosing Purpose Over Paychecks

When Waste Warriors began hiring for their Shimla location, I knew I had to apply. Transitioning from a successful filmmaking career wasn’t an easy decision on paper. In my previous profession, I earned a good income and had plenty of free time. In the NGO sector, the financial rewards are different, and the work is demanding.

However, a big package doesn’t matter when you are working for a cause. This journey has been enriching. Even while working with Waste Warriors, I am proud to be supporting my family and helping arrange my sister’s wedding this year. It proves that when you work with purpose, things fall into place. My ultimate goal is to take the experience and the “Waste Warriors model” back to my hometown in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, to start something similar there.

The Power of Community

What surprised me most about joining Waste Warriors was the environment. From day one, the team has been incredibly welcoming. There is a rare kind of selflessness here; people work together without ego or expectation, driven purely by the mission.

One of the highlights of my time at the Head Office was participating in the Climate Chaupal. By a stroke of luck, I joined the 17th Climate Chaupal of the YUWA project. It turned out to be a record-breaking day—it saw the highest volunteer turnout in 17 months! Being part of that energy and seeing so many people come together for the planet was an unforgettable experience.

Looking Ahead

I am no longer just a filmmaker; I am a warrior for the environment. My journey is proof that you don’t need a massive salary to find fulfillment—you just need a mission you believe in and a community that supports you.

I look forward to learning everything I can here so that one day, my home in Chamba can also benefit from the lessons I’m learning on the ground today.
